This presentation
is going to be a quick walk through the basics.Although we’ll leave time for questions a
at the end, please feel free to ask questions as they come up.
One of the common
situations I run into with nonprofits is that they see grant “seeking” solely
as grant writing.
Writing actual
grant proposals is actual only one small part of the process and I’ve found
that if organizations focus their efforts on the other parts of the process,
they experience much better results.
To illustrate,
many organizations I’ve worked make the mistake of using a “shot gun”
approach in grant seeking and send out as many proposals as they can using
the same proposal package with every funder and doing very little research
and cultivating along the way.They
measure success in the percentage of grant requests awards and this success
rate is often as low as 10 percent.
The more effective
approach is to do homework on every single prospective funder. If you get a chance to talk to a
prospective funder before you submit an application and the funder feels that
your work falls within their area of interest, you’ll often find that they’ll
work with you to help you present your request in the most favorable light.
This approach can
be broken down into 6 main steps and those steps will be the basis of the
presentation today.
